About
“My work is inspired by the classic California dream and timelessness of modern design from the mid 20th century. I focus on luminous color interactions, and iconic shapes that give glimpses of the idyllic California lifestyle.” – Laura Browning
www.laurabrowningstudio.comRaised in San Mateo, CA, Laura Browning attended schools which emphasized the arts. At home she was surrounded with creativity, her mother being an Interior Designer and her father an Architect and Land Developer. As a young child she discovered her passion for painting and began to develop her talent, knowing she would focus her life around art. As a teenager, her parents permitted her to paint her bedroom, and draw and paint murals all over the walls, never knowing that would be the direction her career would eventually take her. In 1996 she moved to Southern California to complete her collegiate studies in Fine Art, receiving her Bachelors Degree in Drawing and Painting from California State University, Long Beach.
Throughout her career, Laura Browning has been a part of an interesting variety of art related fields which helped shape the artist she is today. She has worked for published artists, acting as the “ghost painter,” the hand behind their work. By learning to match the style, color, and even brush stroke of the artist, she honed her skills of color matching and emulating many styles of painting. She worked as a giclee retoucher, adding layers of paint to printed canvases, enhancing the finished effect. She taught art workshops for families at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, fusing art exhibits with hands on projects to enhance the museum experience, and art history education. She moved to Venice, Italy in 2001 and worked at the Guggenheim Museum, delving into the Italian culture and visual landscape. Throughout her travels around Europe, Scandinavia, Japan and the United States studying art and architecture, she gathered inspiration which she continues to use in her paintings. In 2004 Laura opened a decorative painting company, serving high end residential and commercial clientele in the Los Angeles and Orange County areas. Laura created custom high end murals, and faux finishes for her clients. She worked directly with many interior designers, developing color palettes and designs to enhance their client’s homes. Many of the techniques she practiced in the home decor field are used in her current paintings today, adding texture and depth to her subject matter.
Currently Laura is represented by a few publishing and licensing companies, and her work can be found in various online shops, as well as in large stores such as Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, Kohls and JC Penny. Laura has shown her work in group exhibitions, including shows in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Toronto. For a complete list of exhibitions, please visit www.laurabrowningstudio.com.
